We need responsible development and a reasonable cap to how large we want our stores. By supporting size restrictions for future development we can:
    • Protect the rural character of our island
    • Avoid severe traffic impacts of larger and larger big boxes
    • Allow Kauai residents to take back the control of Kauai's future from mainland corporations

Please attend the January 9th Planning Commission meeting and/or email your Councilmember and ask them to say YES to setting reasonable limits to BIG BOXES development on Kaua'i. For more information about the meeting call - 241-6677 or contact: pulamakauai@hotmail.com

Building With Bamboo 2007: What's Possible?
    @ Bamboo Works, Kapa'a
Everyone in the Kauai bamboo community, especially those interested in building with bamboo, is invited to an informational meeting Saturday, May 12, noon to 2PM, to be held in Kapaa, at Bamboo Works in the Kauai Design Center, 4585 Lehua Street (across from Specialty Lumber, one block mauka of the ABC store.) The meeting is free and open to the public.

The purpose of the meeting, which is sponsored by Bamboo Works, Malama Kauai and Steelgrass Bamboo Farm, is to provide the community with the latest information on bamboo construction, particularly what types of bamboo are available, the many ways they can be used structurally, and the requirements under which a structure utilizing bamboo may qualify for a building permit from the County of Kauai.

Discussion of these and other bamboo-related questions will be led by David Sands, a Maui-based architect with the firm Bamboo Technologies, and Douglas Haigh, Head of the County of Kauai Building Department. Local Kauai bamboo growers and nursery owners, builders and designers, and bamboo suppliers will also be on hand to share their experience and participate in the discussion.

Kauai's climate is ideal for growing hundreds of bamboo species, suitable for everything from construction timber to crafts, furniture and musical instruments. Bamboo is universally admired for its pleasing shapes, colors and overall aesthetic, and as a renewable resource that grows quickly and has low-impact requirements for land area, water and nutrients, bamboo appears to be close to a perfect crop when it comes to creating a sustainable agricultural future for our island.

Yet aside from bamboo furniture, and recently bamboo flooring, it is rare to see bamboo used as a principal component in building, especially structurally. One of the goals of this meeting is to provide Kauai residents with the opportunity to change this state of affairs and take advantage of this readily-available resource.

For more information, please contact Tony Lydgate, 821-1857, tony@steelgrass.org ; or Julian Ruppert, 821-8688, Julian@bambooworks.com .

    County Council's Housing Policy Workshop
    @ Historic County Building, Lihu'e
The County Council is currently crafting a housing policy that will shape the future of affordable housing and development on the island. If housing is a concern of yours then you MUST read over the proposed policy and offer testimony that reflects your interests. There has been very little input from individuals regarding this policy yet it's the one area residents can shape their own future with regard to the future of affordable housing. For more informaiton on proposed housing policy check the County's website at kauai.gov.
