Malama Kaua'i has hit the airwaves! The KKCR Sustainability Show is now featured ever other Friday from noon - 1:00 PM on KKCR, Kaua'i Community Radio at 91.9fm (90.9fm Hanalei, 92.7fm Anahola and 104.7fm O'ahu) and KKCR.org

Show dates include:

  • August 19, 2011 - GENERAL SUSTAINABILITY - Sarah Isabel Parriott, Sustainability Consultant with Paladin Law Group, and Nils Moe, Sustainability Manager for the City of Berkeley, join the program to discuss institutional sustainability inititatives that are happening in the Bay Area of California.
  • July 8, 2011 - FOOD/ENERGY - Arty Mangan, Bioneer?s Food & Farming Director and one of the drivers behind the Dreaming New Mexico Project (a statewide approach to food and energy self-sufficiency), reveals insights to large scale food and energy systems thinking, planning and implentation.
  • June 24, 2011 - TRANSPORTATION PLANNING - Mr. Jim Charlier, a nationally recognized transportation planning professional with over three decades of experience, joins to talk about planning Kauai?s multi-model future.

  • May 27, 2011 - RADIATION/FOOD - A few guests join the show to continue the conversation on about radiation and its effect on our food and eco-systems as well as discuss ocean currents and fish migration patterns. Patty Lovera, Assistant Director of Food & Water Watch, who released a fact sheet on radiation and food, Dr. Jeff Polovina,Division Chief of Ecosystems and Oceanography at PIFSC/NOAA are participating.
  • May 13, 2011 - RADIATION/FUND DRIVE SHOW - Dr. Mark Sircus is the director of the International Medical Veritas Association (IMVA). His primary focus in recent years has been the study of environmental toxicity and iatrogenic diseases and he joins this fund drive show to talk about nuclear radioation from Japan, how it will get to Hawaii and what it means to the safety of locally produced food.
  • April 29, 2011 - ECONOMY - Shanah Trevenna, president of the Sustainability Association of Hawaii, leader of Sustainable Sauders and author of "Surfing Tsunamis of Change" joins Keone and Ben this week.
  • April 15, 2011 - WATER / ENERGY - Dr. Adam Asquith and Henry Curtis of "Life of the Land" join usto talk about a recent KIUC decision to engage a federal process called FERC. This process could result in the acquisition of river, stream and waterfalls by the feds upsurping state and county rights, including kanaka maoli (native Hawaiian) water rights. Bill Tam, the head of the State Water Commission may also call into the program.
  • April 1, 2011 - COMMUNITY - "Value of Hawaii" Show Series (CULTURE) - Jon Osorio, co-editor of Value of Hawaii and Professor of Hawaiian Studies at UH-Manoa, joins us to discuss the history of Hawaii and where we are going from here.
  • March 18, 2011 - WATER - "Value of Hawaii" Show Series (WATER) - Kapua Sproat (one of our favorite local girls) joins us to talk wai wai wai (water).
  • March 4, 2011 - AGRICULTURE - "Value of Hawaii" Show Series (AGRICULTURE) - Charles Rappun, the farmer in the middle of the Waiahole Ditch incident, talks story on the current and future state of ag in Hawaii.
  • February 18, 2011 - EDUCATION - Jennifer Chirico, the Executive Director of the Sustainable Living Institute of Maui joins us to talk about the sustainability program tracks they offer at Maui College and discuss a recent documentary on sustainability that her organization put together called "Turning the Canoe". A viewing of this film will take place later the same evening.
  • February 4, 2011 - AQUACULTURE - Christina Lizzi of Food & Water Watch, and Michael Kumukauoha Lee, talk with us about open ocean aquaculture and the loko i`a (traditional Hawaiian fishpond alternative.
  • January 21, 2011 - COMMUNITY - Community Roundtable with call-in updates from several groups including GreenCarHawaii, Apollo Kaua`i and Zero Waste Kaua`i.
  • January 7, 2011 - GREEN BUILDING - Quinn Vittum, a Founder of ReUse Hawaii, the largest demo and reuse non-profit in the state, joins the conversation to talk about a project on Kaua`i and the topic of reuse and green building.
  • December 10, 2010 - ECONOMY - Alexia Marcous, Vice-President of the Green Chamber of Commerce, talks with us about about the history, mission and goals of the organization.
  • November 26, 2010 - CULTURE - "Value of Hawaii" Show Series (COMMUNITY) - Tom Coffman is an independent researcher, writer, and documentary producer starting his career in Hawaii back in 1965 working for both Honlulu Advertiser and then the Star-Bulletin.
  • November 12, 2010 - MILITARY - "Value of Hawaii" Show Series (MILITARY) - Kathy E. Ferguson is a Professor of Political Science and Women?s Studies at UH-Manoa and co-authored the section on the military with Phyllis Turnbill.
  • October 29, 2010 - FUND DRIVE - Garden Island RC&D joins us in studio as we also reflect on previous guests with recorded material from previous programs.
  • October 15, 2010 - GREEN BUILDING - Ben Sullivan takes over in a discussion with Ken Stokes and Tony Lydgate around green building and, specifically, the use of bamboo.
  • October 1, 2010 - AGRICULTURE - We discuss the 2010 Hawaii Agricultural Conference that took place on Oahu September 23rd & 24th with event co-chair Tova Callender and Ag Leadership Foundation Executive Director Kim Coffee-Isaak.
  • September 17, 2010 - LAND USE & ENERGY - Dr. Makena Coffman, the Department of Urban & Regional Planning UH Manoa, discusses Important Ag Lands, biofuels and sustainability in Hawaii.
  • Septemer 3, 2010 - WATER - Kapua Sproat of the Richardson School of Law UH-Manoa and Isaac Moriwake of Earth Justice join us for a discussion on water rights in Hawaii with a focus on the Na Wai `Eha case on Maui on which they were the lead attorneys.

  • July 9, 2010 - FOOD - Chef Ann Cooper, the "Renagage Lunch Lady" that reinvented school lunch at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School in Berkeley who now runs the Boulder School District?s food program, talks with us about the food our kids are eating everyday.
  • June 25, 2010 - SCHOOL GARDENS - Nancy Redfeather of the Kohala Center and Kaliko Amona of Kokua Hawaii Foundation?s Aina IS Program talk school gardens in Hawaii. Malama Kauai?s School Garden Coordinator, Tiana Kamen, joins the conversation in studio.
  • June 11, 2010 - AQUACUTLTURE - A follow up to our May 14th program, we talk with Joylynn Paman, Executive Director of `Ao`ao O Na Loko I`a O Maui (Association of the Fishponds of Maui), and Noelani Lee of Ka Honua Momona on Moloka`i about how loko i`a (traditional fishponds) and how they are the local alternative to corporately operated open ocean fish farms.

  • September 19, 2008 - VOTING - Are electronic voting machines privitizing our democracy? Join guests Jason Forester and Bart Dame, founders of Safe Vote Hawai`i, as we discuss the state of Hawai`i's elections and how electronic voting machines could effect the outcome of the next election.
  • September 5, 2008 - FISH - Tim Fitzgerald, a scientist for the Environmental Defense Fund who consultanted on the Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch Program, will join us to discuss the world's seafood stocks, what practices are being implemented to protecting them and how we can make the right seafood decisions so that we eat the most healthy and sustainable seafood available.
  • August, 22, 2008 - Guest David Chernushenko shares his insights about this and his web project, www.livinglightly.ca. This Canadian author, educator and film producer has been working in the area of sustainability for nearly 30 years. Co-host and part time resident, Blake Hudelson, just returned from a 3-week trip visiting many sustainable cities across Europe. His recent documentary about the trip is available on YouTube.
  • August, 8, 2008 - Following the Kaua`i Roundtable Candidates Forum, spend an hour with the Mayoral Candidates and find out how they stand on issues related to a sustainable Kaua`i.

What Is The Show About You Ask?
Malama Kaua'i is dedicated to sustainability and bringing together experts from far and near to enlighten and motivate us toward a more sustainable life for ourselves and our island community. It's up to us to make the differences we desire.

General Format
Each show has a general format that includes interesting news and a local events calendar followed by our weekly guest or topic.

  • Opening and overview of the day's show
  • News - interesting, sustainable tid-bits supplied by www.SaveKauai.org
  • Weekly guest and topic - guest and topic will change but will always tie into sustainability. Call-in questions are also welcomed. If you have an idea for an upcoming show please let us know!
  • Sustainable Events Calendar - details about local, sustainable events hosted by Malama Kaua'i.
