Conference Mission:
To educate and inform the Kaua'i community and our county leaders of the potential of maximizing diversion through Reduction, Reuse & Recycling. To gain widespread public support for the concept of Max 3R / Zero Waste by providing strong and specific models of successful Max 3R programs implemented elsewhere.


Keynote Speakers

Eric Lombardi , Executive Director of Eco-Cycle, Inc has had a long career in resource conservation, social enterprise development and non-profit (NGO) organizational management. Eco-Cycle is a nationwide pioneer in the recycling industry and has grown to become the largest community-based recycling organization in the U.S.A. Eric is recognized as an authority on developing comprehensive community-based resource recovery programs and consultant on the social and technical aspects of creating a "Zero Waste - Or Darn Near" society.

Pete Grogan is the Manager of Market Development for Weyerhaeuser Recycling, one of the largest paper recycling organizations in North America. Formerly, Pete was an international recycling consultant for R.W. Beck and Associates where he assisted in implementing municipal recycling programs throughout North America and Asia. Pete has authored 100 articles for recycling magazines and spoken at recycling conferences in 20 nations.

Brett Stav is a Senior Planning & Development Specialist for Seattle Public Utilities responsible for promoting the city's environmental education programs. In 2004, Stav led education efforts for Seattle's 60% Recycling Campaign, which included a mandatory recycling ordinance for businesses and residents, new waste prevention programs and residential food waste recycling collection.

The Potential for Max 3R on Kauai (8:00 - 8:45)

A motivational presentation explaining what Max 3R might include on Kauai, highlighting positive recommendations from the Beck report and using those recommendations as a springboard to recommend even more aggressive efforts and a major paradigm shift .

Q&A (8:45 - 9:00)
There will be a brief (5 min) period for Q&A following each presentation and all the Friday evening presenters will be available for an informal Q&A at the completion of evening's program.


Saturday 02/03 - Max 3R Successes

A detailed presentation describing the Boulder CO Zero Waste program (including a short video highlighting the success of the Boulder Colorado Zero Waste program) and a review of the numerous Zero Waste planning and implementation underway today.

A detailed presentation describing Seattle's successful diversion efforts including   required legislation, residential & commercial collection, funding, processing, etc.

There will be a brief (5 min) period for Q&A following each presentation

Statewide Panel (11AM - 11:50)
A panel with professionals from across Hawaii describing the challenges and opportunities they have encountered and specific recommendations for achieving Max 3R in Hawaii.

Saturday Lunch (12PM - 12:50)

A roundtable discussion on the potential of Max 3R on Kauai and a discussion of the strategy for attaining our Zero Waste goals.   

Breakouts (2PM - 3:20)
Each breakout will produce a detailed analysis of max 3R potential around particular specific issues, and further work at formulating the implementation strategy (political, legislative, financial, etc) to reach our zero waste.

There will be two separate sessions of 35 min each on each topic with a 10 min break between sessions. Breakouts Topics
