Aquaponics & Aquaculture Team

Over the course of 2014 and 2015, Malama Kauai will be creating an aquaponics facility at our Community Farm in Kalihiwai, which will provide fish, training, and research for the community. We are also supporting several school garden sites across the island who have or wish to have aquaponics systems installed and maintained.

One of our first steps is to establish a working group that will help guide the process along and support it when complete. We’re seeking volunteers that would like to be part of this process and who may also have an interest with creating and maintaining a commercial-scale aquaponics system and fish sales business. This is an exciting opportunity to learn and gain hands-on aquaponics experience while giving back to the community. The system will be used to accomplish several objectives:

§ Provide training for teachers and students from the Kauai School Garden Network and backyard and community aquaculturists
§ Provide a nursery site to supply fish stocks to schools and communities
§ Grow vegetables and grass stocks and supply a local, renewable source of fertilizer
§ Create a research setting for localization of fish food
§ Open green business pathways for our youth and community members
§ Generate enough fish at current market prices and demand to support its operation beyond the initial start up costs

Requirements:
§ Ability to follow through on commitments
§ Available a minimum of a few hours per week to work on projects
§ Experience in aquaponics, sales, or marketing is a HUGE plus
§ Experience with off grid solar system management also a plus
