Earth Day Rising V!

It’s the 5th Annual EarthDay Rising!

Sunday, April 19th – 7:45am to 7:30pm
Malama Kaua`i Community Farm, Wai Koa Plantation, Kalihiwai Ridge

Join us for this year’s `ohana style celebration featuring live music, food, workshops, hands-on ag projects, keiki activities, clothing swap tent, vendors, and more… The 1st 20 attendees receive an `ulu tree from The Breadfruit Institute!

Keiki (12 & under) & Kupuna (65+) are free! Others are $15 suggested donation on the day of, to help kokua our entertainment and knowledge providers. 

We suggest attendees bring a reusable water bottle, a camp chair, and sun protection. We are a no-waste site, so you will need to pack out what you bring in. Mahalo!

Morning Workshop Sessions, 8:00am to 9:00am: 
– Chicken Butchering w/ Nicolai Barca
Hands-on chicken slaughtering and butchering demo. Bring your own bird if you like!
– Making Hard Cider w/Jim of Kaua`i Brew Club
Learn how to make tasty tipsy treats using local juices and minimal equipment.
–  Renewable Energy & Biofuels w/Daniel Erickson, Energy, Sustainability, & Biofuel Instructor at Kauai Community College

Hands-on Farm Projects, 9:00am – 12:00pm:
– Food Forestry with Paul Massey of Regenerations
Apply fertilizer & mulch to the remarkable collection of fruit trees in the upper agroforest.
– Youth Garden Build & Natural Fence Install with Malama Kaua`i
Learn to build a living lilikoi fenceline from invasive strawberry guava while helping to create our new Youth Garden for Keiki on the Farm educational activities.

Afternoon Workshop Sessions, 2:00pm to 3:30pm: 
– Cacao & Vanilla as Sustainable Niche Crops w/ Tony Lydgate of Steelgrass Farm
Discuss cacao and vanilla from field to food, including growing, using, and processing these crops, as well as a vanilla pollination demonstration.
– Coconuts for Sustainability w/ the Low Bearing Coconut Preservation Mission
They’ll be sharing how to grow and care for coconuts, harvesting, uses and products, and doing a coconut cream making demo.
– Solar Technology on Kauai w/Goran Radovanovic of Haleakala Solar

Learn all about using solar in farm or home applications, off-grid solar and hydro projects, emerging solar technologies, and deciding if solar is right for you.

Evening Workshop Sessions, 3:30pm – 5:00pm:
– All About Kava w/ Gary Mack of Kava Kaua`i
Starting with a short kava ceremony, you will learn to prepare kava for drinking, propagation and growing of kava, and touch upon the history and cultural use of kava.
– Backyard Chickens w/ Matt Stevenson of CTAHR
The basics of raising chickens for farm or backyard.
– Mead Making w/Shastin Grace
Learn to make your own mead using local honey.

Sustainable Solutions Think Tank, 5:00pm – 6:30pm:
New this year, we’ll work together to brainstorm and design sustainable business and program solutions to Kaua`i’s most pressing issues around water, agriculture, energy, waste, housing, and more. Bring your creativity to begin conversations around strategic solutions. The Small Business Development Center will be on-hand to provide free business consulting for those who want to see their dreams become a reality.

Keiki Activities:
– 10am: Build Your Own Coral Colony w/DLNR
– 11:30: Coloring & Wheel of Fortune Games w/Kauai Invasive Species Committee
– 1pm: Listening to Trees w/Robyn Arrington
– 2pm: Drumming Workshop w/Phil Villatora, Children of the Land

We’ve got your tastebuds covered all day with George of da Jungle & Organic Shave Ice, Le’a ke Kau’ia, Coconut Water from LBCPM, & Rainbeau Jo’s. You can also learn more about what’s happening on Kaua’i with the Dept. of Land & Natural Resources, Dept. of Fish and Wildlife, Kaua`i Invasive Species Committee, Hawaii Farmers Union United, and more.

Bring in your clean, unwanted clothing to gift to others, and pick up some new pieces to add to your wardrobe!
