*Malama Kaua'i is a Kilauea based non-profit working to raise awareness on the importance of sustainability, to assist in implementing sustainable practices and support sustainable projects beneficial to the community.
Malama Kaua'i recently spoke with Monique Dehne, founder of the Healthy Hut Natural Food Store in Kilauea, about the market and her thoughts on sustainability.
Malama: What was your vision when you opened the Healthy Hut?
Monique: At 19 I took a job at Hanalei Natural Food Store, which was my first real exposure to organic and natural foods. I worked with them for six years before starting the Healthy Hut here in Kilauea. The idea was, and continues to be, providing the people of Kilauea with quality food at a reasonable price.
Malama: How do the products at the Healthy Hut benefit the community over those offered at your general grocery store?
Monique: I really try to look at the providers of the products we carry and support those who have a conscious way of doing business. I look for companies that are family owned and operated, like small farms and coops, or ones that put their profits back into communities. I try to stay away from those that have the worst corporate business practices. Just because it says organic doesn't mean the company operates with the right values. I want customers to feel good knowing the money they spend here isn't just supporting organic and natural foods, but is also going to companies that have the right values at heart.
Malama: What would be an ideal sustainable project that you'd like to see here in Kilauea?
Monique: I'd like to see a Kilauea based recycling program so that people don't have to leave the community to be able to recycle.
Malama: Thank you for taking the time to talk with us.
Monique: Thank you!

Educate yourself on this important global issue by watching the 1-hour show followed by a question and answer session with Ken Stokes of the Kauaian Institute.
Other future showings include "An Inconvenient Truth", "Peak Oil" and "The Future of Food". These events are FREE and open to the public so get out and get involved! For more information please check the Malama Kaua'i website or call 828-0685.
Ken Stokes of the Kauaian Institute recently started a sustainability blog site called Sustainability in Hawai'i, or SusHI for short. The blog is a great resource for island relevant sustainability information. Daily updates and intelligent commentary make this a homepage nominee. Check it out at: http://www.kauaian.net/blog/
